Eduardo Souto de Moura initially studied sculpture before switching to architecture at the School of Fine Arts, University of Porto, the current FAUP – Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. From 1974 to 1979 he worked with architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who encouraged him to start his own firm.

Souto de Moura’s first project was the design competition for the Casa das Artes, Porto, built 1991, a cultural center with an auditorium and an exhibition gallery in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion. Other work included residential, shopping centres, schools, art galleries, and a cinema, in countries including Spain, Italy, Germany, Britain and Switzerland.

From 1981 to 1990, Souto de Moura was assistant professor at his alma mater, and was later appointed Professor at the FAUP. In 2011 Moura was award the Pritzker Prize, architectures highest honour, to be followed in 2012 by the Wolf Prize.
